A 21-year-old man is in hospital after an apparent shooting early Saturday near a Vancouver elementary school.

Police say they were called to Sexsmith Elementary School on Columbia Street at about 1 a.m.

Two youths had confronted a group of men, police said in a statement. One of the youths pulled a gun and fired at the men, who fled.

Police said the two youths did not know the men in the group.

Later, an injured man arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, said police.

There have been no arrests and the investigation is continuing. Police say they will be at the school throughout the day.
