Shooting in West Abbotsford leaves young driver dead

A man believed to be in his late teens is dead following what police say may have been a drive-by or hit-and-run shooting in West Abbotsford.

Homicide investigators called to scene of what may be a drive-by shooting in a residential area

A man believed to be in his late teens is dead following what police say may have been a drive-by shooting in West Abbotsford.

Abbotsford police Const. Ian MacDonald said the department received multiple 911 calls about shots fired in the area of Sparrow Drive and Goldfinch Street at around 7:45 p.m. PT Thursday night.

Responding officers found a man with gunshot wounds slumped over in the driver's seat of a dark-coloured SUV.  He was already dead by the time police and paramedics arrived.

MacDonald said the dead man appears to be in his late teens, and may be from Abbotsford.

Officers conducted a search of the area for other victims and for suspects, but found neither.

"Witnesses in and around the area reported that either one or two vehicles rapidly took off from the area at around the time of the shooting," MacDonald said.

"It sounds as though this is shooting that took place with shots fired from one vehicle into another, and I think we've seen that a few times here in the Lower Mainland," he said.

Witnesses described the two vehicles that sped away as a newer white Acura TL and a dark-coloured sedan.

The Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called in to take over the investigation, MacDonald said.
