Details are emerging about the arrest of Jason White, a high risk sex-offender who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, after he was located at UBC's Vancouver campus.

Vancouver police say Jason White, 45, was at one time deemed a dangerous offender after being found guilty of breaking into the home of a Nanaimo woman and violently sexually assaulting and robbing her. (Vancouver Police Department)

He was taken into custody early Saturday morning for a breach of his long-term supervision order, but is also a person of interest to investigators in an attempted home invasion involving an elderly woman in the Oakridge neighbourhood, Thursday night.

Now it has come to light that when White was arrested Saturday at 3:30 a.m. PT, he was at UBC where hours earlier, thousands of students had attended a year-end block party, carefully watched over by more than 100 security guards hired by the Alma Mater Society.

"We tracked, located and arrested White ... on the UBC campus," said Const. Brian Montague in an e-mail to CBC News. "He was taken into custody by a VPD canine officer."

Montague says VPD will work with RCMP to see if White is linked to recent sexual assault and prowling incidents on campus.

Montague says White is a convicted sex offender who was deemed a dangerous offender after being found guilty of breaking into the Nanaimo home of a 74-year-old woman, sexually assaulting and robbing her, in 1994.

He says White appealed the dangerous offender designation and was eventually released on a long-term supervision order.

"Why he was at UBC will be part of the ongoing investigation," wrote Montague to the Canadian Press. "We will be having a close look at White's activity over the past few days, weeks and months."

"We will also continue to liaise and work with other jurisdictions to share any information that may assist them."

UBC has had a series of "night prowler" events where a man was seen lurking in bathrooms and bedrooms at campus residences, and a sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman last month.

The description of the suspect in those incidents was of a man in his mid to late 20s with dark skin.
