Vancouver turns curbside recycling over to Multi-Materials B.C.

Recycling collection will look slightly different come October as the City of Vancouver hands responsibility over to a non-profit organization.

The City of Vancouver will no longer be responsible for residential recycling collections starting Oct. 3

Multi-Material B.C. will be taking over residential recycling collection starting Oct. 3.

Recycling collection in Vancouver will look slightly different come October as the city hands the responsibility over to a non-profit organization.

Multi-Material B.C. (MMBC) now has full responsibility for the management of recycling collection and will start the rounds of curbside pick-up on the week of Oct. 3.

But aside from a different truck picking up recycling at the curb, residents won't notice much difference in the service.

There are no changes to garbage or green bin organics services and the current collection calendar remains in effect for those materials.

One small perk in the change is a $13 to $18 recycling fee will be dropped from utility bills and property taxes next year.

Many of the 37 city employees currently working in recycling collection will move to new jobs with the city, according to officials.

Those positions include 27 new street cleaning jobs to deal with a 30 per cent increase in 311 calls since 2014.
