Vancouver police warn of 'violent' purse snatchings in Chinatown
Older Asian women targeted in four purse snatchings in the past week, say police
Vancouver police are stepping up patrols in Chinatown as they investigate a series of "violent" purse snatchings targeting older Asian women.
They believe the same person — a young man — is responsible for four purse snatchings, that each happened around 5 p.m. PT between Wednesday and Sunday.
Sgt. Randy Fincham called the incidents "cowardly attacks," on women between the ages of 59 and 91, who were targeted based on their age, sex and ethnicity.
"These women should be able to walk around the streets of Chinatown, not fearing for their safety," said Fincham.
In each case, the victim was approached from behind, shoved, and then a man ran off with her purse.
Two of the victims, aged 80 and 91, suffered minor injuries, while one 81-year-old woman ran after the thief, but lost him as he fled, said Fincham.
The fourth victim, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured.
"Each of these incidents were violent, very forceful, and we're fortunate there were only minor injuries as a result of it," said Fincham.
The VPD is asking for tips from anyone who can identify the suspect, who is described as:
- A white man in his 20s.
- About six feet tall with a slim build.
- Wearing blue jeans and a dark jacket.
