Rescuers say a snowmobiler was killed in a recreation area about 100 kilometres northeast of Prince George.

A snowmobiler was killed by an avalanche Saturday morning in a mountainous area about 100 kilometres east of Prince George.

Rescuers were called to the region, known as Torpy, and recovered the body of an adult male, RCMP said in a statement.

The man was travelling with a group of four other snowmobilers who were unharmed.

Mounties say they first received a report of the incident shortly before 11 a.m.

"Someone was lost, and other than that can't speak much more to incident," said Dale Bull, search manager for Prince George Search and Rescue.

"We just know that one person became involved in the avalanche and that person was the fatality."

The search manager also said rescuers could not fly to the snowmobilers due to fog.

The area of the accident, between the Fraser and McGregor rivers, is a prime snowmobile area, he said.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating while police say the group was experienced and properly equipped.
