The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating the suspicious death of a woman in Prince George on Saturday night.

Prince George RCMP were called to a home in the 1100 block of Alward Street with a report of a disturbance around 10 p.m. PT, Saturday.

They located an individual believed to be connected to the complaint, but did not find a potential female victim. A search for the woman was unsuccessful.

At about 10.28 p.m. PT, police were notified that a woman had been found nearby in medical distress. She died later at the University Hospital of Northern B.C.

The IIO took over the case from Prince George RCMP on Wednesday.

"Due to the sensitivity and what is known at this preliminary stage of the investigation, questions surfaced about a possible and yet-to-be-confirmed connection to the initial police attendance and/or action taken," RCMP said Thursday in a statement.

No further information is being released at this time.
