A Port Hardy police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing after shooting and killing a man reported to have been threatening people with a knife.

The Independent Investigations Office said they would not recommend charges against the RCMP officer in the 2015 shooting.

According to the IIO report, police were called to a location near a high school track on the morning of July 8 after reports of an armed man making threats.

After two officers left their squad car, the armed man charged towards them, despite being told to drop the knife.

One cop, the subject of the investigation, shot him five times.

Eight minutes later, paramedics arrived on the scene and pronounced the 24-year-old man dead.

Toxicology reports found no drugs or alcohol in the dead man's system.

The IIO report included evidence from 26 witnesses, including two other police officers. The officer who shot the man did not provide a statement to investigators.
