A harbour porpoise that beached itself near Victoria Tuesday is recovering at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Biologist Anna Hall and dozens of volunteers kept the porpoise afloat for several hours before it was transported to the Aquarium's marine mammal rescue centre late Tuesday night.

Hall said the animal was highly stressed, but she's hopeful it will survive.

"So far, so good. He's been named Theodore," Hall said. "So Theodore has successfully taken a feeding tube, which is good news.  At the moment, it's probably a minute-by-minute or hour-by-hour watch."

It's not known whether the porpoise beached itself because it is sick or was injured.
