Lamborghini owner gave keys to child, 13, who wrecked car: police
Luxury car deemed a write-off after Highway 1 crash was for sale, police said
West Vancouver police released more details around the events that led to a 13-year-old crashing a Lamborghini Huracán into a ditch off Highway 1 near Cypress Bowl last week.
The sports car was in the process of being sold and the owner who handed over the keys didn't know the age of the driver, police said on Friday.
On Wednesday, police said a joyride by a 13-year-old led to the single-vehicle crash that resulted in the car being deemed a write-off. The autotrader.ca website shows used Lamborghini Huracáns listed between $318,888 and $550,900.
Police originally responded to the crash in a ditch by the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway on March 25 at about 11 p.m. PT.
"The youth and a friend decided to take the car for a drive, but were unable to control the car in the dark and rainy conditions," according to Wednesday's statement by police.
No one was at the scene when officers arrived, so a search began to ensure anyone inside the vehicle during the crash wasn't hurt. The vehicle owner led them to find the car's occupants, who were uninjured, police said.
Teens faces several charges
On Friday, West Vancouver police said the car was in the process of being sold.
"The registered owner gave the youth the keys and permission to drive the vehicle," communications officer Suzanne Birch said in a statement.
"We do not believe the owner was aware of the driver's age or lack of a driver's licence."
Birch said the logistics of the sale meant that the transaction would take place over several days and the owner had given over custody of the car.
Police said they quickly found the teen in a residence a short distance away from the crash scene, while adding that the teen's parents had "no feedback" to share with media.
The teen has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with speeding, driving without due care, failing to remain at the scene of a crash and driving without a licence.
