Artists add colour to Fernie's alleyways with painted dumpsters
The colourful dumpsters add character and express the community's unique identity
Fernie is adding to its collection of colourful dumpsters with the city's the third annual "Out of the Box" public art project.
Artists from the community will be setting up at Fernie's Station Square and will be given a freshly donated dumpster this Sunday to turn into bright pieces of public art.
"They really put an identity to the community, first and foremost, and really show residents and visitors what Fernie's about," said Courtney Baker who created and organizes the annual event.
"Lots of them are quite bright and graphic which is great so you can see them from a distance and they're really clear."
Fernie now has 20 dumpsters from previous years that have weathered the rough and tumble world of garbage disposal.
"You can't miss them. They're everywhere and they really put art in public places." said Baker.
11 dumpsters will be painted this weekend, 10 by individual artists and one to be decorated by the community.
