Okanagan teen dies after Halloween attack in bush

RCMP say more than 30 officers are working to solve the killing of an 18-year-old woman who was found unconscious and badly injured in the bush near Armstrong, B.C., on Halloween night.

Taylor van Diest was found by friends and family at about 8:45 p.m. PT Monday in the bushes about three metres from a railroad track that runs through Armstrong, which is in B.C.'s north Okanagan region.

Van Diest was taken to a hospital in Kelowna, where she died.

RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk said van Diest had gone to meet someone.

"What is known is that Taylor was out last evening for Halloween. It is not clear who she was to meet with," he told a news conference on Tuesday.

"We've brought in our helicopter, we've got dog teams, our forensic identification units are working, we have major crime all working towards bringing this to a very quick, successful conclusion."

Police say Van Diest was going to a Halloween party.

Friends went looking for her when she failed to show up.

Friends described the teen as fun-loving, very outgoing and active in the community.

"Everyone is just heartbroken, completely, completely upset. It's been a tough day. I am going to miss her terribly," said friend Russell Tibeau. 

The cause of her injuries will not be released until an autopsy has been completed.

Police say they have not identified any suspects.
