New Westminster police-involved shooting leaves man in critical condition
Police say they have recovered a firearm from the scene they believe belongs to the victim
A man has been taken to hospital in critical condition in the aftermath of a police-involved shooting near the Walmart in New Westminster's Queensborough neighbourhood.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which provides civilian oversight of serious police incidents, has taken over the investigation.
According to the IIO, New Westminster police were called to the vicinity of the WalMart around 12 p.m. PT Friday after reports a man was causing a disturbance.
Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott said after they arrived there was an interaction with a second man, who was subsequently shot. He said a firearm has been recovered from the scene. Police believe it belongs to the man who was shot.
The B.C. Ambulance Service says he was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The IIO says it has deployed investigators to the scene who will be obtaining physical evidence and interviewing witnesses.
It's asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything to give them a call at 1-855-446-8477.
