Big promises for new emergency room

The Fraser Health Authority offered a sneak peak at what will soon be the new emergency department at Surrey Memorial Hospital on Friday morning.

The new facility, which is the size of three ice rinks, will be the second-largest emergency department in Canada.

New features will include separate entrances for adults and children and specialized areas for substance abuse and mental health.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts says the expansion will help meet the demands of the rapidly growing city.

"With the City of Surrey having 1,000 to 1,200 people a month moving into the city and as well as the most children of anywhere in the province being born, it really speaks to the needs of this entire region," said Watts.

The new emergency room is slated to open on October 1.
