Nelson Skalbania says Point Grey-Cornwall bike lane isn't needed

Vancouver businessman Nelson Skalbania says the construction along Point Grey Road for the $6 million Point Grey-Cornwall bike route is inconvenient and unwarranted.

Skalbania, a cyclist whose family owns the Wedgewood Hotel and Spa, has lived on Point Grey Road for over two decades.

"I've been cycling from my house to the Wedgewood for 25 years and I never had any complaints," said Skalbania in an interview with CBC Radio's Rick Cluff on The Early Edition.

Since mid-January, the City of Vancouver has closed a one-kilometre section of  the road between MacDonald and Alma streets in order to begin construction on a controversial new bike route.

The new bike route includes traffic-calming measures and will connect the Burrard Bridge bike lanes with bike paths at Jericho Beach, and with neighbourhood bike routes on Vancouver's West Side.

"I didn't need a bike lane," Skalbania said, adding the construction for the bike route is akin to trying to fix a problem that does not exist.

"We have people making arbitrary decisions without asking us what we want," said Skalbania.
