NDP win new seat in City of Vancouver but lose tight race in False Creek

The NDP has won a new seat in Vancouver but lost a very tight race in False Creek, where Morgane Oger was hoping to become the province's first transgender MLA.

Oger lost to B.C. Liberal incumbent and former Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan, who has never lost an election.

The party has won a seat in Fraserview, where NDP candidate George Chow knocked out Justice Minister Suzanne Anton.

Anton was seeking re-election after winning by just 470 votes in 2013. Chow, like Anton, is a former city councillor. He last ran as an MLA — and lost — in Vancouver-Langara in 2013.

Fairview

Vancouver-Fairview was also expected to be a tight race. The riding includes half of three diverse neighbourhoods: the southern half of Fairview, the eastern half of Shaughnessy and the western half of Mount Pleasant.

Fairview has switched back and forth between the NDP (2005, 2013) and the B.C. Liberals (2001, 2009) in the last four elections.

George Heyman, the former leader of both the BCGEU and the Sierra Club B.C., was elected in 2013 and has been re-elected. He was up against the lesser-known Gabe Garfinkel, a former aide to Christy Clark and current communications consultant.

The Green Party candidate was Louise Boutin, a real estate agent.

Point Grey

For a long time, Point Grey was a sure-fire Liberal win, but that is no longer the case, since NDP candidate David Eby has taken the helm.

Eby defeated Liberal Leader Christy Clark by 1,063 votes in this riding in 2013. Since then, he has been spoken of as a potential future leader of the NDP

He was up against Liberal candidate James Lombardi, who has been the head of global business development for Free The Children and director of WE Day, and Green Party candidate Amanda Konkin.
