More charges laid against chiropractor

Nine further charges of sexual assault have been laid against Victoria chiropractor Michael Buna, following a police investigation that began last year.

The first charge of sexual assault of a female patient was laid against Buna in November.

But more patients came forward after Victoria police set up a confidential phone line and invited calls from people concerned about treatment they'd received.

The charges involve alleged incidents between 1985 and 2002.

Police Chief Paul Battershill says the call-in line was an appropriate tool to use in this type of investigation.

"I've checked with the Vancouver police who just completed one. They made use of a confidential contact number. I've been in contact with the Lethbridge police who just made use of a confidential contact number, and I understand that in Ontario that practice is followed all the time."

The B.C. College of Chiropractors says it's also received five complaints about Buna and is co-ordinating its investigation with the police.

Police say Buna is still working as a chiropractor, but under supervision.
