An inmate who was accidentally released from a Vancouver Island correctional facility at the weekend is back in custody after turning himself in.

An inmate who was accidentally released from a Vancouver Island correctional facility at the weekend is back in custody after turning himself in Thursday morning, Saanich police have confirmed.

Grant Christopher Barker, 30, left the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre on Sunday after he was mistakenly identified as another man set for release.

Barker surrendered himself to the B.C. Sherriff's Office in Victoria, where he was arrested and detained pending a court appearance.

At the time of his release, he was awaiting trial on numerous charges related to a domestic matter and a break-and-enter, and was due to appear in court today.

On Monday, he was charged with escape from lawful custody and identity fraud, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
