Metro Vancouver weather: Pineapple Express slams city with rain

Rain, rain and more rain — Vancouver is getting slammed with another soaker, courtesy of a Pineapple Express, bringing heavy downpours and mild temperatures from the sub-tropics.

The wet weather system hit the south coast of B.C. on Friday morning and will continue to batter the area all the way through Saturday.

​Environment Canada forecasts three to five mm of rain will fall every hour, resulting in a total of 50 to 70 mm of rain by Saturday morning in Metro Vancouver and closer to 100 mm near Howe Sound and the North Shore mountains. 

However, the rain should taper off Saturday afternoon, CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe said, and temperatures are also predicted to be well above seasonal for the weekend and early next week. 

Flooding in Vancouver

All the rain pounding Metro Vancouver has caused localized flooding throughout the region. In Vancouver, water has risen up past car tires, such as near Clark and William streets due to a blocked catch basin.

There are pools of water in some of the play areas at Stanley Park and Still Creek in Burnaby, B.C. has been overflowing.

On the bright side, unlike the previous B.C. storm which was coupled with king tides, it is low tide which makes it easier for the water to be forced out of areas and through storm drains.
