An elderly man in a mobility scooter who fell nine metres down the Yaletown Roundhouse Canada Line station elevator shaft in Vancouver on Monday intentionally rammed the doors, according to Transit Police.

Sgt. Clint Hampton says a witness statement described the man driving his scooter at a high speed and slamming into the doors, causing them to open.

"I can't tell you how they opened because I'm not an elevator tech," said Hampton.

CBC News has reached out to TransLink for clarification on why the doors would open on impact, but it said it is unable to provide comment while Transit Police are investigating.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services received the call at 7:30 p.m. PT Monday.

Crews arrived on scene to pull the man from the shaft. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Stroup said the man was quickly taken to hospital.

He described the man's injuries as "bumps and bruises."
