Man dead after collapsing on Grouse Grind

A man died from a medical emergency while on the Grouse Grind on Wednesday night.

Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue said they received a call from one of their members hiking the trail at the time, who saw the man collapse at the halfway mark.

"He actually witnessed the collapse and contacted us right away, as well as 911," said Danks. 

North Shore Rescue dispatched an aircraft to fly a medical team to the halfway point on the trail, where they treated the man for about 20 minutes before long-lining him back to the Cap Gate station.

Co-ordinated response

RCMP said North Shore Rescue and District of North Vancouver fire crews were able to get the man off the trail at about 8 p.m., but he died at the scene. 

Danks said the man, in his mid-50s, was hiking with a couple of other people at the time. He said this call was a coordinated response with B.C. Ambulance and the District of North Vancouver Fire services.

"I feel very confident this patient received the best possible care that he could have," said Danks. "Our condolences go out to the family."

North Vancouver RCMP said they couldn't specify the man's medical emergency.
