A young man is in hospital after being attacked in what police are calling a targeted shooting in East Vancouver Wednesday afternoon.

Vancouver police say they responded to reports of gunfire near Nanaimo and Dundas streets around 3 p.m. PT.

A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition.

In an emailed statement, Const. Brian Montague said no one has been arrested and officers are still finding and speaking with witnesses to help identify suspects.

"Shootings are usually targeted at individuals who are involved in high-risk behaviour associated to guns, drugs or gangs — this attack appears no different" said Const. Brian Montague.

"However, when they take place in the middle of the day and in residential neighbourhoods, they put everyone at risk."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Vancouver police major crime section at 604-717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
