A man in Maple Ridge was airlifted to hospital Saturday afternoon after calling police to report he'd been shot.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the call came in at about 12:40 p.m. PT, from a property just east of 240 Street on Lougheed Highway.

The man was taken by air ambulance to hospital, where he was being operated on as of 3:30 p.m., she said.

Police had not spoken with the victim by that time and were not sure about the extent of his injuries, but launched an investigation.

Dunlop said the RCMP is conducting a "very thorough" search of the property, and brought in police dogs. So far, no one else has been found on the property, she said.

Police closed Lougheed Highway, in both directions, near 240 Street for several hours and established a perimeter around the property. Just before 6:30 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP tweeted that Lougheed had been partly-reopened, with just a single lane open in each direction.
