Luka Gordic stabbing: 2 teens charged with manslaughter released on bail
Third young person charged, 17-year-old teen, has been denied bail
Bail has been granted to two of four teenagers charged with manslaughter in the stabbing death of 19-year-old Luka Gordic in Whistler, B.C. over the May long weekend.
A third teenager was denied bail on Wednesday.
The three young people, who are all aged 17, cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Another teenager, 18-year-old Arvin Val Golic of North Vancouver, has also been charged with manslaughter.
Two were released on bail set at $5,000 on Wednesday afternoon and have a curfew of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. PT.
The charges stem from an altercation between two groups that ended with Gordic stabbed multiple times shortly after midnight on Sunday.
"This was a situation where a group of young people who knew each other had a dispute which turned deadly," said IHIT spokesperson Stephanie Ashton at the time.
'Devastating' facts of case
Gordic's family was in court for the bail hearings, and said it was "devastating" to hear the facts of the case. Some of them found it too emotional and had to leave the courtroom, said Gordic's uncle Gianni Buono.
"My nephew, Luka's older brother, ... I escorted him out. It was just too much to hear when he heard that one of the individuals pierced his little brother's heart."
Buono said the family was not surprised by the result of the bail hearing.
"Nothing is going to totally satisfy us, but we are very happy that at least one individual was denied bail and we expected the other two to be released, even though we do not agree with it," said Buono.
'We are prepared to stay the course, stay prepared and strong together ... we're going to see this through."
