Kelowna grandmother 'scared' by $50M Lotto Max win
June Bergh was the only winner of Friday's Lotto Max draw.
A Kelowna grandmother who picked up a cheque for $50 million from the B.C. Lottery Corporation this morning says she felt "scared" by the "unbelievable" experience.
June Bergh was the only winner of Friday's Lotto Max draw. She and her husband Gus picked up her cheque at the BCLC headquarters in Kamloops.
Bergh, a retired operating room nurse, said she only buys tickets occasionally.
"In the morning when I got up and Gus said to me, 'Oh, big winner in Kelowna,' I sort of had a little feeling that I might be lucky and win a small amount, like maybe one million."
Later in the day she checked the ticket while shopping at the local Safeway, but after seeing the figure she did not believe it and asked her husband to check it again for her.
"I said to him I think there is some money I won on my ticket. Would you come and check it? And he saw the figure and he couldn't believe it either."
The pair have been married for 54 years. They plan to help their children and grandchildren with their homes and they will take a cruise, but otherwise they don't have big plans in the works.
The odds of winning the Lotto Max jackpot are nearly 29 million to one.
Bergh is one of several recent big lottery winners in the region. On Saturday someone from nearby Vernon won the $5 million 6/49 jackpot and in February Robert Goertzen took home $21.9 million in a Lotto 6/49 draw.
