Two people were taken to hospital following a shooting involving a police officer Wednesday evening in the Township of Langley, B.C.

Delta police say officers were near the intersection of 200th Street and 24th Avenue at about 6:20 p.m. PT as part of a "serious investigation" from the previous week.

Officers tried to arrest two men related to the investigation. During the arrest, police fired shots and struck one of the men, according to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), the province's civilian police watchdog.

The two men suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the IIO said in a statement.

Cpl. Holly Largy with Langley RCMP said earlier Wednesday evening the scene around the intersection was being "contained and assessed."

An IIO spokesperson the agency is investigating the shooting. Delta police say the Langley RCMP has taken over the investigation regarding the two men.

Jose Vargas, a spokesperson for Provincial Health Services Authority, said first responders were called to a Super Save Gas station at the intersection of 200th Street and 24th Avenue at around 6:20 p.m. PT.

Warren Weisbrod, a bystander, said he was parked outside of a shopping complex near the intersection at around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday when he heard two loud booms, followed by a series of popping sounds.

"It was terrifying," he said, adding he was about 60 metres from the source of the sound.

"They were distinct and you knew it was gunfire. Everybody was frozen and in utter disbelief."

Weisbrod said, within two minutes, about five police cars rushed to the scene.

It appeared the shooting happened outside a small house, he said.

Weisbrod said police cordoned off a section of 200th Street near the intersection.
