Landslide closes Trans-Canada until late Saturday

The Trans-Canada Highway is not expected to reopen until about 11 p.m. PT Saturday, following a huge landslide in B.C.'s Fraser Canyon.

The Trans-Canada Highway is not expected to reopen until about 11 p.m. PT Saturday, following a huge landslide in B.C.'s Fraser Canyon.

Officials say the slide came down on the highway about one kilometre east of the Yale Tunnel, covering the road with debris.

Officials said they would have to assess the stability of the slide area while the debris is cleared.

Earlier reports said the highway could be reopened by about 9 p.m. PT Friday, but that information has now been updated on the DriveBC website.

Traffic is being rerouted via Highway 5 and Highway 3 during the closure.

Highway 1 also was closed outside Golden, B.C., earlier Friday due to concern about avalanches, but it has since been reopened there.
