Jordan MacWilliams, Delta police officer, second-degree murder charge stayed

Delta police officer Jordan MacWilliams will no longer face a second-degree murder charge in the 2012 death of Mehrdad Bayrami after the Criminal Justice Branch today announced a stay of proceedings.
The original charge stemmed from an investigation into the shooting of Bayrami on a paved pathway outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster, B.C., on Nov. 8, 2012.
Police responded to reports of a distraught man with a gun in the parking lot of the casino. After a lengthy five-hour standoff during which police could be heard imploring Bayrami to drop his weapon, he was shot.
In Tuesday's announcement, the Criminal Justice Branch said that, "a careful review of the case, CJB has determined that the available evidence no longer satisfies its charge approval standard for the continued prosecution of Const. MacWilliams for any criminal offence. As a result, a stay of proceedings was directed in the case."
