John Nuttall and Amanda Korody allegedly built bombs before Canada Day
John Nuttall and Amanda Korody didn't know they were being videotaped by RCMP
A jury is watching a couple brainstorm in a motel room near Vancouver as they build bombs out of pressure cookers, which the Crown alleges they planned to plant around the provincial legislature to kill civilians.
John Nuttall and Amanda Korody had no idea they were being videotaped by the RCMP in the weeks leading up to their arrest in July 2013. They are each charged with four terrorism-related offences.
In the latest video played for the jury, recorded on June 28, Nuttall is seen working at a large table in their hotel room in Delta, south of Vancouver. He messes about with glue and pressure cookers, which he is attempting to assemble into bombs.
He repeatedly stresses they have no time to waste.
"Soldier, on your feet," Nuttall tells his wife.
"I need you now. I hope you're not just sitting on the edge of the toilet or something."
He commands Korody to research buildings around the legislature, suggesting she use Google's Street View service, which offers street-level photographs, to case the area in Victoria they plan to attack.
Sometimes he paces the room, practising the pronunciation of Arabic names and words.
"No emailing, no nothing but working," he says. "If we don't have these done, there is a good chance we will be killed. ... You understand?"
Undercover operation
Nuttall and Korody were targeted in an undercover operation that saw them connect with an undercover officer posing as an Arab businessman who was sympathetic to radical Islam and had agreed to help carry out their plan.
Earlier on June 28, the officer told Nuttall he needed the bombs ready by morning. The timeline clearly agitated Nuttall, who expressed concern he might not be able to finish in time.
The next day, the jury has heard, Nuttall expected to meet an associate of the officer who the couple believed would provide them with explosives to complete their bomb.
The Crown has told the jury the man was actually another undercover officer and that the RCMP ensured the bombs were inert.
Nuttall and Korody both pleaded not guilty.
