Inmate serving life sentence escapes from Mission Institution

Correctional Service Canada said 57-year-old John Norman Mackenzie is currently serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, armed robbery and other offences.

RCMP have issued an arrest warrant for an inmate who has gone missing from Mission Institution.

Correctional Service Canada said John Norman Mackenzie was last seen around 7 p.m. PT on Tuesday. He was missing during a head count at the minimum-security unit of the facility later that night.

Mackenzie, 57, is currently serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, armed robbery and other offences. A statement from RCMP said he's considered to be a low risk to the public.

He is described as being around five feet eight inches, 197 pounds, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He has a scar to the side of his right eye.

Mackenzie was last seen wearing jeans and a white T-shirt.

Anyone who has information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police.
