B.C. Indian wedding DJ gets worldwide acclaim — and work
Asad Khan — a.k.a. DJ Khanvict — is playing at the City of Bhangra grand finale Saturday night
A good DJ can make or break a wedding. Especially an Indian wedding.
Maybe that's why B.C.'s Asad Khan — a.k.a. DJ Khanvict — has flown around the globe playing for large crowds and earning international acclaim as one of the top wedding DJs in the world.
"Music is a big, big part of an Indian wedding, especially the reception," Khan told On The Coast guest host Michelle Eliot. "To get to play at that, it's an amazing experience because you're really controlling the night for 500 or 600 people who are there to celebrate."
"I love my job. I think I have the best view in the house."
- VIBC City of Bhangra Festival Returns to Vancouver and Surrey June 11-18
- Bhangra classes offered for high school credit in B.C.
Khan has been named B.C.'s best wedding DJ for the last three years.
Still works day job
Despite his success, DJing isn't Khan's main line of work. An engineer by trade, he works Monday to Friday for a developer as a project manager.
"Most people go to the beach or go hiking on the weekend, I love going to a banquet hall and DJing," he said. But, "It's a lot of coffee Monday morning, I'll tell you that."
Long-term, Khan says he doesn't see being a DJ for the rest of his life. He says he's missed out on a lot of moments in his personal life because he works so much, and says there's a certain age and time for it.
If you want to book DJ Khanvict for your wedding, you're probably out of luck: Khan is fully booked through 2018.
However, you can check him out when he plays a set at the City of Bhangra grand finale at the Fivesixty nightclub on Saturday night.
