IIO called to RCMP shooting in Burnaby
Man in distress allegedly threatened himself and police
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called to an officer-involved shooting in Burnaby on Friday night.
The IIO said RCMP officers responded to a complaint of a distressed man with a gun near the 9300 block of Salish Court around 8 p.m. PT.
When police found the man, he allegedly threatened himself and then the officers, according to a press release.
Police fired their weapons and the man was shot. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment. No officers were injured.
"IIO investigators are being deployed to the scene," said Ralph Krenz, a spokesman for the IIO.
"Immediate tasks will include working with the RCMP who have secured the scene; identifying any witnesses; seizing any physical evidence and determining what officers were involved."
The IIO added the RCMP will run its own investigation into the actions of the suspect and any other persons involved prior to the incident.
