Mounties say three people were killed Sunday after two semi-trailers collided on Highway 1 east of Golden, B.C.

RCMP said police and paramedics responded to a crash on Highway 1 at the Yoho National Park west gate, about 35 kilometres east of Golden, near the Alberta border, around 6:50 a.m. MT.

A statement said emergency responders found the occupants of two semi-trailers dead at the scene of the crash.

Late Monday, RCMP confirmed that three people died in the collision — two in a cattle truck and another in a logging truck.

Families later confirmed two of the victims were Jagsir Gill and Brandon Johnson.

Gill was a father-of-two from Calgary.

"He was probably the most soft-spoken, gentle soul you'll ever meet," said Amandeep Gill, Jagsir's cousin.

"And he adored his family," added another cousin, Navdeep Gill. "Any moment he got to spend time with his family, he always spent that time with them."

Johnson's family confirmed his death with CBC News but declined an interview. Johnson was from Chilliwack, B.C.

Investigators said it appears that one of the trucks drove into oncoming traffic and caused a head-on collision.

The cattle truck, carrying at least 24 animals, was heading back from the Western Canadian Classic competition in Manitoba. Several cattle were killed.

A forensic team was at the scene of the crash on Monday, according to Robinson.
