Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea reunite at Vancouver's Chan Centre

In one week, jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea will perform a sold-out concert at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver as part of their first tour together in almost 40 years.

Hancock and Corea announced their world tour of piano concerts in January. The duo's last joint appearance in Vancouver was in 1978.

“Herbie is a musical phenomenon and a rare human being,” Corea told The Associated Press in a statement in January. “To me he’s been a dear friend as well as a lifelong inspiration.”

In 1968, then 28-year-old Hancock came to Vancouver to play a series of gigs at a small club. Though he never identified the club, Hancock described for then-Hot Air host Bob Smith what it was like to perform at the Apollo Theatre in New York.

"A lot of people think that jazz is a purely intellectual kind of music and that it's only meant to stimulate the head," he said in the 1968 interview.

"It's not meant to stimulate the head. It may stimulate the head as a byproduct, but the real product is to stimulate your body and stimulate your feelings … and your heart."

Hancock told Smith then that "the black audience is probably the greatest critic of music," because if they're not moved by the music, they won't give any feedback.

"No polite applause, no nothing," he said.  

The sold-out concert begins at 7 p.m. PT at The Chan Centre for Performing Arts on Mar. 15.
