Haida Gwaii hits level 3 drought conditions
People on the islands are being asked to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 30%
The B.C. government is urging people living on Haida Gwaii to use less water due to low stream and groundwater levels that have brought the archipelago to a level 3 drought rating.
Residents — along with municipal, agricultural and industrial users — are asked to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 30 per cent, according to a government release.
"Impacts from recent precipitation were short-lived, and stream and groundwater levels are expected to continue to drop," the Ministry of Forests wrote.
If water levels keep dropping, Haida Gwaii may join parts of Vancouver Island that are already at level 4 drought — the highest level.
Provincial water managers could also temporarily suspend water use in affected watersheds and aquifers, if necessary.
