Fraser the Moose revealed as latest mascot for Prince George, B.C.

A new mascot named Fraser the Moose was revealed in Prince George, B.C. by the city's tourism agency on Thursday night, joining the region's already multiple mascots Nanguz the Fox, Spirit the Caribou, Rowdy Cat and Mr. PG.

"Everybody loves a mascot," Leanne Schinkel, the manager of sport and event development at Tourism Prince George told Daybreak North's Audrey McKinnon. "You can never really have enough."

Fraser's identity and appearance were kept a closely guarded secret until the Prince George Spruce Kings hockey game against the Surrey Eagles, when he made his debut at puck drop.

"He's definitely an adventurer. He's really excited about Prince George. He loves to get out, and he's definitely an outdoorsy type, but he loves getting out in the urban environment too," Schinkel said.

Tracy Calogheros with Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre said Prince George residents tend to be hard on the city, and mascots give them a way to celebrate where they're from. 

Earlier this year, Calogheros ordered 1000 small, stuffed Mr. PG dolls, and has been receiving requests from Prince George expats around the world for their own cuddly piece of home as well as from locals.

"When you have folks taking him with them when they travel to Mexico, or they travel to Cabo San Lucas, or wherever the heck they've taken him, and sending back photos of him having fun in all these different place it's celebrating the fact that we're from Prince George as opposed to apologizing for it all the time," she said.

"I think the mascot gives people a symbol that they can latch on to and do that with."
