Environment Canada is warning people in B.C.'s northeast to expect wet, heavy snow over the weekend.

"Initially the precipitation is going to start as rain Friday morning and as we get into Friday night that's when temperatures are going to start dipping," said Environment Canada meteorologist Matt MacDonald.

"Now by the time people wake up on Saturday morning there could be five, 10, perhaps even 15 centimetres of the white stuff on the ground, particularly over the higher elevations."

'It's going to be sticking'

MacDonald said cold air from the north combined with a storm from the west plus a dash of moisture would mean the wet, heavy snow will stick around until Sunday.

"It's going to be sticking to the ground, sticking to people's windshields," he said.

"A good reminder with this early season snow, you know, get ready for winter."

MacDonald said overall B.C.'s northeast can expect 'relatively normal' conditions for the rest of the winter, as a predicted La Nina has "fizzled out."

B.C.'s winter driving rules come into effect Oct.1.

As of Oct. 1, winter tires or chains are required on some B.C. highways. (BC Ministry of Transportation )
