Burnaby RCMP say two people have died after a two-vehicle crash on the city's Boundary Road early Saturday morning, and the stretch will likely be closed for some time.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in a statement that officers responded to reports of a crash just before 5 a.m. PT Saturday near the intersection of Boundary Road and Forest Street.

According to RCMP, one car was going west on Forest Street when it was hit by a car heading north on Boundary Road.

Two people in the westbound car died after the collision, Kalanj said, and the other driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The cause of the collision is still being determined. More information will be provided when it is available," the RCMP spokesperson said.

In a later statement on Saturday, RCMP asked for anyone with dashcam footage of the area between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. PT to contact them.

"In the past two weeks alone, we have had three significant motor vehicle collisions that have resulted in life-altering injuries and/or death," said Burnaby RCMP Chief Supt. Graham de la Gorgendiere in the statement. "Our road safety unit has also taken a significant number of impaired drivers off the road.

"If we all do our part by slowing down and driving with care we all should get home safely."

RCMP say northbound traffic on Boundary Road was closed as of 9 a.m. PT Saturday, and will likely be closed for several hours.
