Three people were killed in two separate car accidents in the Lower Mainland Sunday morning.

In Delta, one person was killed in an accident on Highway 10 at 8:46 a.m. PT, police said.

Surrey assistant fire chief Chris Keon confirmed that the victim was a Surrey firefighter. Keon said firefighters are not releasing his name or any further details out of respect for the family and his coworkers.

Delta police said they believe the victim, who was the driver and sole occupant of Jeep, was on Ladner Trunk Road when he went off the roadway to the right and struck a semi-trailer that was parked off the highway.

Police spokeswoman Sharlene Brooks said it's too early to say what may have contributed to the crash.

Officers say a stretch of Highway 10 between exits 110 and 112 will remain closed for several hours as officers investigate.

The drivers of the cars were killed at the scene, police said. Neither car was carrying a passenger.

Police have interviewed witnesses, but the cause of the crash is unknown.
