Resident living near tunnel boring sites are concerned about the construction project

Anxious residents of Port Moody, B.C., turned up at a public meeting demanding answers about sinkholes linked to the construction of the Evergreen Line SkyTrain tunnel.

The residents are concerned about the safety of their homes and streets after two sinkholes opened in recent months. The first sinkhole appeared in the parking lot of a building on Chateau Place last fall and then a second one on Cecile Drive on Jan. 2.

Lori Leonard shared her concerns about the tunnel-boring for the line.

"What is the possibility any of us could be driving down Cecile or coming up Cecile at any point and a sink hole opens up into our vehicles?" said Leonard.

Amanda Farrell, the executive project director for the Evergreen Line, said the company would try to prevent it from happening again.

"We will take every step we can to prevent a further occurrence of a sinkhole," said Farrell.

But that was not good enough for Tara Martin, who felt the public was not getting enough information.

"They haven't been very transparent about what's going on, and I think there is risk to our community and our members."

The sinkholes were not only the concern raised by residents. They are also worried about cracks appearing in the walls of their homes, noise, vibrations, road closures, parking and what happens if there are problems after construction is completed.

Officials say the $1.4 billion project  is on schedule and will be completed by the summer of 2016.
