Elderly driver rams car into store in Cranbrook B.C.

A disoriented driver in southeastern British Columbia is accused of causing more than his fair share of mayhem after losing control in a parking lot in Cranbrook.

The incident comes to light only a day after a 73-year-old Port Coquitlam man, charged in the hit and run death of a teenage girl, claimed it wasn't his fault, causing some to raise concerns about elderly drivers.

In the Cranbrook incident, RCMP say an 86-year-old man was pulling into a shopping centre parking lot Thursday, when he confused the gas and the brake, sending his vehicle careening through the wall of the store.

The uninjured man then tried to reverse out of the building but lost control again, this time ricocheting off five parked vehicles.

Still at the wheel, Mounties say the man put his car into gear one last time, lurching forward over the sidewalk and crumpling the front fender into a retaining wall.

No one was hurt in the bumper car brouhaha and investigators blame driver confusion for the chaos.

Police say charges against the elderly man are pending.
