Coroner probes death of Terrace woman arrested by RCMP

The B.C. Coroner's Service is investigating the death of a Terrace woman who died last night at Vancouver General Hospital after going into medical distress while in RCMP custody.

Alyssa Oleksiuk, 25, was taken into custody by RCMP on Sept. 3.

She went into medical distress and was first taken to the local regional hospital. She was then transferred to VGH on Sept.4 and died last night just before 9 p.m. PT.

Coroner Barb McLintock says because Oleksiuk was in police custody at the time, the coroner's office is still determining if it will hold an inquest into the woman's death.

"Although most cases where injury/death occurs in police custody do lead to an inquest, it is no longer an absolute. There are exceptions, and the Chief Coroner won’t make the final decision until all necessary information has been gathered," said a statement issued by McLintock on Thursday morning.

No information about the cause of her death has been released.
