A number of residents were forced to escape their homes after a fire broke out in a Commercial Drive apartment building Tuesday night.

Flames first broke out in an apartment above the Red Burrito on 1st Avenue shortly before 9:00 p.m.

Residents left through a fire escape while someone inside the building used a dry chemical fire extinguisher in an attempt to stop the flames from spreading.

Wilson said residents used the fire extinguisher correctly and were able to contain most of the fire. (Cliff Shim/CBC)

"It was a very big help, they did a very great job," said Battalion Chief Kevin Wilson.

"They knocked it down initially so that it didn't get a big head start."

Wilson said two people were treated for minor cuts and smoke inhalation at the scene.

The damage was contained to the single apartment unit and residents were allowed to return to the building later in the evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
