CBC Pride Week: we'll help you get in the spirit
CBC Vancouver to feature radio series, TV special, #cbcvanpride photos, personalities marching in parade
CBC Vancouver is celebrating Pride Week in a big way this year.
On deck: a week-long radio series, a special one-hour TV show, and we'll be out in force at Vancouver's Pride Parade Aug. 3.
We want you to get in on the action too. Choose a photo which captures the spirit of Pride in Vancouver, and share it on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #cbcvanpride.
We will feature some of your pictures on our website and on CBC TV's Our Vancouver.
Spotlight on "minority within the minority"
CBC Radio's The Early Edition marks the week with an in-depth exploration of the challenges facing LGBTQ people from ethnic or immigrant communities.
This group often faces difficulties in coming out, and encounters discrimination from the mainstream LGBTQ community.
"Vancouver has a thriving LGBTQ scene — if you’re a white gay male," says series producer Gavin Fisher.
"But if you’re from an ethnic group, it might be a different story."
Gavin's series Pride & Prejudice will air on The Early Edition on CBC Radio One July 28 to August 1.
Personal stories of Pride
On CBC TV's Our Vancouver, Gloria Macarenko hosts a special episode devoted to LGBTQ stories and issues in Vancouver.
Gloria delves into the idea of 'aging with Pride' with lesbian author Claire Robson.
Gloria also sits down with the transgender girl whose human rights complaint changed a policy in Catholic schools in Vancouver.
Eleven-year-old Tracey Wilson took on the Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver and won.
Plus, the CBC's Fred Lee gives us an insider's guide to Pride.
That's on a special Pride edition of Our Vancouver airing on Sat. Aug. 2 at 6 a.m PT, Sun. Aug. 3 at 11 a.m., and Monday Aug. 4 at 11 a.m.
Pride anthems celebrated
In the week leading up to Vancouver's Pride Parade, CBC Radio's On The Coast celebrates the history of the gay anthem.
These are songs that, according to Wikipedia, feature "lyrics often marked with hope against the odds, pride, unity, or defiance."
Tune in to CBC Radio One at 5:20 p.m. throughout the week, to hear songs ranging from "Over the Rainbow" to "Young Hearts Run Free."
They're guaranteed to fill you with pride and and a desire to dance the night away.
Finally on Sunday, Aug. 3, join some of your favourite CBC personalities — such as Dan Burritt, Miyoung Lee, Karin Larsen, Lisa Christiansen, Matthew Lazin-Ryder, Charmaine De Silva and Stephanie Mercier — as we proudly march (and dance!) in the Vancouver Pride Parade 2014.
The parade begins at 12:00 p.m. PT at Robson Street and Thurlow Street, heads west to Denman Street, follows Denman to Pacific Street and Beach Avenue and finishes at the Sunset Beach Pride Festival and Market.
