Fire crews in Metro Vancouver appear to have a grass fire on the south side of Burnaby Mountain under control.

However, firefighters remained on scene Thursday evening to ensure the blaze, at the base of the mountain between Production Way and Lake City Way, did not flare up again.

One witness told CBC News it appeared to be a grass fire, though several large trees had caught fire as well.

When the blaze was at its biggest, smoke could be seen billowing up from the mountain from several kilometres away. Witnesses said the smoke appeared to die down by about 6:30 p.m. PT.

At least 12 fire trucks and several police cars were on scene, and two helicopters were also called in to help fight the blaze.

Crews had been urging people to stay out of the area, saying there were concerns the wind could carry the flames towards nearby homes.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
