Bike to Work Week: does it really always rain for the cycling challenge?
Drizzle in Vancouver on Monday morning is not unusual for the start of the May Bike to Work Week
As if right on cue, the kick-off to the Bike to Work Week challenge also kicked off with low clouds and morning drizzle in Vancouver on Monday.
Does it feel like mother nature has been working against you year after year, making your attempt at a healthier lifestyle all the more challenging? Well, you wouldn't be wrong.
Taking a look at the weather for the past five Bike to Work Week Mondays — we found rain every time. Here's a look at the Monday totals from YVR since 2011:
- May 25, 2015 — drizzle
- May 26, 2014 — 3.8 mm
- May 27, 2013 — 6.8 mm
- May 28, 2012 — 7.4 mm
- May 30, 2011 — drizzle
While the exact dates lining up with rainfall is a bit of an unfortunate coincidence, rain in the last week of May is quite common, with Vancouver usually getting about 65 mm over the whole month.
While May isn't close to being one of our rainiest months, the end of May, beginning of June is a transitional time for us, and that can go either way when it comes to getting summer or winter weather.
Luckily it looks like skies should clear by mid-week for the cyclists.
