B.C. windstorm cancels ferries, knocks out power

High winds and driving rain have cancelled several sailings with BC Ferries and knocked out power to thousands on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

High winds and driving rain have cancelled several sailings with BC Ferries and knocked out power to thousands of customers on Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast.

Routes impacted by the inclement weather are between:

  • Horsehoe Bay and Departure Bay.
  • Tsawwassen and Duke Point.
  • Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.
  • Tsawwassen and the Southern Gulf Islands.

Environment Canada reported winds reaching up to  70 km/h in Victoria, and up to 100 km/h in Tofino.

The high winds knocked out power to more than 20,000 customers on Vancouver Island and more than 3,000 in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast according to the BC Hydro's web site.

Environment Canada has issued several public weather statements for many southern parts of the province.

There are also snow fall warnings in effect for Whistler. The ski resort is expecting 10 to 15 centimetre Saturday and more overnight. Mountain passes will also receive snow later Saturday.

On Friday, Avalanche Canada warned of potentially deadly slides in British Columbia's central Columbia mountains.

The warning includes parts of other regions, such as the Kootenay Boundary, north and south Columbias, and the Cariboos, and lasts until at least Monday.
