Police investigating if gunfire, stabbing near Coquitlam mall linked to B.C. gang conflict
Stabbing victim suffered non-life threatening injuries, is not co-operating with police, RCMP say
Police are looking for video to help an investigation into whether gunfire and a stabbing near a Coquitlam, B.C., mall on Monday afternoon are linked to gang violence in the Lower Mainland.
RCMP received numerous calls about shots fired near the Coquitlam Centre at around 4:06 p.m., the force said.
The shooting happened at Northern Avenue and Baldwin Street, Const. Deanna Law said in an email Tuesday. Police believe one shot was fired and no one appears to have been injured as a result.
Not long before that shot was fired, police say there was a fight in the parking lot about 100 metres from the eastern entrance of the mall that led to one person being stabbed.
The stabbing victim went to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is not co-operating with police, Law said.
"It is unclear at this time if the stabbing and shooting are related, or if there is any connection with the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict," Law said.
She is urging anybody with further information or dashcam footage to contact Coquitlam RCMP.
Last Monday, a 20-year-old man was shot dead in nearby Town Centre Park, one of three fatal shootings in public places across the Lower Mainland last week.
