Great Scott! Could Marty McFly and Doc Brown's trip to the future have taken them to British Columbia instead of Hill Valley, California?

There have been DeLoreans spotted all over Vancouver during what is officially Back to the Future day.

Even Vancouver Police joined in the fun and confirmed the sightings.

October 21, 2015 is the furthest the characters from the much-loved 1980s film travelled to in what was then the future. Previously, a number of hoaxes cropped up saying it was Back to the Future day, but on Wednesday producers of the film confirmed the date with a special message.

The sightings of DeLoreans in B.C. may have been the vehicle belonging to Burnaby resident, Volker Seidel. The film and car enthusiast was first "intrigued" by the futuristic looking vehicle when he first watched the film as a boy.

When he found out DeLoreans were more than just a movie prop, at least the ones without flux capacitors, he knew he had to own one.

Shortly after he immigrated from Germany to Canada — where DeLoreans are more widely available for purchase, he realized his childhood dream.

"Yes it is 80s style. It's kind of 'bricky.' it doesn't have the round edges that most of the cars these days have, but I really like the shape," said Seidel as he stood proudly in front of his car.

"The gull-wing door is something special ... I fell in love with it."

As for whether he's ever attempted to reach the time travel speed of 88 miles per hour in his car, Seidel says he was worried about getting a ticket but he may have tried, once.

"Actually the speedometer only goes up to 85 [miles per hour] ... at the time that was the max the American government allowed," laughed Seidel.

B.C. fans celebrate #BTTF2015

Like Seidel, fans from across B.C. were excited to share their memories of the trilogy.

Part-time Vancouverite, Jim Michaels, was one of the producers of the sequel. He posted a photo of himself on the original set.

Marcella Bernardo watched B.C. boy and the film's star, Michael J. Fox, do an interview and thought the future didn't look too bad.

However, some Vancouverites did note the future didn't quite turn out the way the film had predicted.
