Police say they rescued a baby seal found stranded on some rocks in Deep Cove in North Saanich.

In a news release, Sidney North Saanich RCMP say they responded to a report about the stranded animal on Aug. 10 at 5 p.m.

They say they then contacted the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, which analyzed photos and video of the animal and determined it needed further assistance. The pup was then transported to Wild Arc in Victoria.

The pup has been named Laki-Kai, which they say roughly translated from Hawaiian means "Lucky-Sea."

RCMP say Laki-Kai is now being taken care of by Rescue Centre staff in Vancouver who expect him to make a "favourable" recovery.

RCMP say the Rescue Centre will provide updates about the seal on their Facebook page in coming days.
